September 17-21, 2008 Dye To The Rescue When Felting
Workshop description: It is very rare that an idea is absolutely complete at conception. Although I am a textile artist working with the hand feltmaking medium I often employ dyeing techniques in various stages of my work. Whether it is dyeing washed natural fleece, roving or batts, or dyeing patterns in fabric for inlay design motifs or shaping the surface of the finished item by tie-dying after completion I find the knowledge of protein dyes very important in my profession. Learn how to move ahead hand-in-hand with both felting and dyeing to produce projects of depth and shape. Learn to dye finer wools such as merino as we follow some of the ideas from the book Fabulous Felt Scarves. We will prepare and dye a variety of fibers suitable for felting, as well as, silk fabric for inlay in the feltmaking process and link the conditions of the dye bath with furthering the condition of felted items. Expect to sample ideas in small groups as well as produce scarves and follow through to a seamless beret or vessel. Instructor bio: Raised in Boston, in the home of a wool and fiber merchant, Jorie studied textile design at RISD and in Finland, where she was first introduced to Scandinavian felt making techniques in 1977. Returning to Finland for more study, teaching, and exhibiting, really was the start of her continuous travels and research of Central Asian nomads actively producing felt. Since arriving in Japan 17 years ago she has set up Joi Rae Textile’s Studio, which produces clothing, accessories, hats, and items for interiors. Jorie’s teaching experience includes Haystack, Peter’s Valley, PRO Chemical and Dye, as well as RISD’s Summer Textile Institute and the SDA Conference in Kansas City. She is the author of Felt Making Wool Magic and her work has been published in Fiberarts Design Books, Surface Design Magazine, Shuttle, Spindle & Dyepot, Echoes (UK) as well as other European & Asian publications.
